Pressing on to Thekkady

We continued on our journey, away from the stunning tea plantation covered hills and into the forest. I introduced my driver Thomas to the music stylings of my ipod – he took a particular liking to Swedish House Mafia and let out a disappointed sigh anytime a relaxing piece of music was selected – he couldn’t even appreciate Death Cab for Cutie! Music education finished 3 or so hours later when we arrived at the spice plantation. I assumed each plantation would grow a different spice but to my surprise each plantation has a bit of everything – coffee, cocoa, fruits, cardamom, turmeric, pepper, chilli, rubber, vanilla beans and a whole host of medicinal herbs and ayurvedic plants. Most interesting fact – there is a spice called ‘allspice” which I had previously assumed was a mix of a number of different spices but I discovered that it is actually just the one plant with a very interesting mixed taste. I also was intrigued by all the spices that are said to address permanent hair removal, insulin control and even weight loss!

Next stop was Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, home of many different forms of wildlife living in their natural environment. I took a boat ride through the park and spotted deer, wild boar, birds, a turtle, bison and even a herd of elephants! Being monsoon season, the guide told us it had been over a month since a whole herd had come out to play. This quickly counteracted my disappointment of not seeing any tigers.

Then it was time to check into the hotel – WOW. I was literally on the top floor of a tree top bungalow. Huge verandah and even a spa bath with views right over the valley. Incredible!! Upon check in I was asked if I wanted a massage – I of course said yes and quickly made my way down to the spa for a half hour before heading back into town for the cultural performances, both of which are art forms specific to Kerala. I saw a Kalaripayattu Martial Arts performance which is said to draw its inspiration from the power and strength of animals. The second show was Kathakali which translates to ‘story-play’ and the actors are dressed up in elaborate costume and dramatic makeup as they use only facial expressions and movements to communicate with the audience. Both performances were so different from each other but both incredible in their own right. That said I was so pumped to head back to my divine hotel room for a spa bath and room service. I even woke up early this morning just to absorb the view some more!

Thekkady – I like you. A lot.
