We continued on our journey, away from the stunning tea plantation covered hills and into the forest. I introduced my driver Thomas to the music stylings of my ipod – he took a particular liking to Swedish House Mafia and let out a disappointed sigh anytime a relaxing piece of music was selected – he couldn’t even appreciate Death Cab for Cutie! Music education finished 3 or so hours later when we arrived at the spice plantation. I assumed each plantation would grow a different spice but to my surprise each plantation has a bit of everything – coffee, cocoa, fruits, cardamom, turmeric, pepper, chilli, rubber, vanilla beans and a whole host of medicinal herbs and ayurvedic plants. Most interesting fact – there is a spice called ‘allspice” which I had previously assumed was a mix of a number of different spices but I discovered that it is actually just the one plant with a very interesting mixed taste. I also was intrigued by all the spices that are said to address permanent hair removal, insulin control and even weight loss!
