Lydia, Nikki and I embarked on our adventure yesterday to explore Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana. Now the pronunciation of this word has caused us considerable grief, however it turns out you pronounce it “lyoo-BLYAH-nah”. We found our hostel, “H2Ostel” by the banks of the Ljubljanica River near the Dragon Bridge. Once settled we raced off to see the city. It unfortunately sprinkled all day but it didn’t really affect us. We walked through the old town streets (which reminded me of Salzburg), bought fruit at the markets and made some purchases – giftage for Matty and a gorgeous coat that Nikki and I both bought. We ducked and weaved our way up to the Ljubljana Castle. We were so amazed by how lush the vegetation was and the Castle was interesting and medieval. They were holding an art exhibition inside – through the castle rooms and basement. The view from the top was stunning! We then went to the triple bridge and the Franciscan Church but then were extremely distracted by the shops. I made way too many purchases and was very relieved that I didn’t have to hide them from Dadda when I got in the car after work. It’s so much more guilt-free!

We had Italian for dinner – probably cheating given we were in Slovenia but the menu was amazing. Lydia had gnocchi, Nikki had mushroom risotto and I had tagliatelle with prawns, leek and pine nuts – yum scrum. By this time we were buggered so we headed back for some sleep.

Day 2 we decided to visit the Postojnska Cave, about an hour out of Ljubljana. The cave itself is 20kms long and the biggest of thousands that lie between Slovenia and Italy. We got on a miniature train and headed 2 kms into the cave. We then had a guided tour through another kilometre of the cave and then headed back by train. There were some beautiful sections and I learnt plenty about stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, columns etc. The curtains were the prettiest though; they looked like scarves dangling from the ceiling! We had a hot chocolate – very much Max Brenner style but tens more flavours before jumping back on the bus. I had a thick white hot chocolate with ground hazelnut! We then headed back to the city – I was so in awe of the countryside – SO GREEN! We grabbed lunch at the market and headed to the train station. So that leads me to this moment – on a train to Croatia’s capital – Zagreb. We’re spending the night and getting up early to go to Plitvice Lakes National Park. Ahhh the lakes are going to be beautiful!
