I Heart This City

So it’s that time in the week where I have a slight freakout and realise I have much updating to do because so much has happened since my last post. So here’s an attempt at filling you in. Let’s start with today. It is beautiful outside – sunny, crisp and Nikki’s birthday. Could I ask for anything more? I think not. A big day of German, shopping, coffee drinking, cake eating and bar hopping awaits.

I’m in love with Vienna. I have met amazing people. I have eaten soooo much. I have seen so much. I think you all need to come see it for yourselves. Here is an abbreviated update of the last few week of my life...

Dienstag 16/2 – Sightseeing tour of Vienna, all I can say is FREEZING, had us all close to tears. This was closely followed by dinner at the biggest schnitty joint in town and a little pub crawling in the Bermuda Triangle.

Mittwoch 17/2 – Schönbrunn Palace. It was spectacular. However, the gardens will not show their glory until the spring but we’ve already planned to have a picnic in the palace gardens when the flowers bloom.

Donnerstag 18/2 – Uneventful but delightful to have an afternoon off!

Freitag 19/2 – We had a parliament tour – quite enjoyable and went to dinne
r with Nikki and Lydia at Cafe Europe. We had a view straight onto Stephansplatz and my gnocchi was incredible.

Samstag 20/2 – What a day! We got up bright and early to bus it to Graz, Austria’s 2nd largest city. We started the day at Zotter Chocolate Factory and let me tell you, this place walked all over the Cadbury Factory. It was such an adventure that resulted in a very sore tummy. They had every imaginable type of chocolate in every imaginable form. My favourite was the milk station. You were given a glass of hot frothed milk and then you waited on the outside of the room as the chocolate chairlift passed through with tonnes of chocolate varieties for you to choose and melt into your drink. YUM! We then had a walking tour of pretty Graz and a big hearty dinner before heading home for some much needed rest.

Sonntag 21/2 – Sunday marked the day of catching up on all things that had been neglected over the last couple of weeks. I went for a run as I had to celebrate my first day in sunshine and I did laundry as I had nothing to wear. I had to spend the day lining up for the washing machines in shorts – not fun. An enjoyable evening with Nikki and Lydia followed as we cooked up whatever we could find and went for coffee (worst coffee of my life though, VERY disappointed but relieved the baklava washed the icky taste from my mouth).

Montag 22/2 – We had a schnitzeljagd! This is German for a scavenger hunt and seriously so much fun! Raced around the city for hours – on and off all kinds of transport, taking photos in bizarre formations, dressing up, manner wafers (YUM), jumping in fountains, posing on streets, red bull, getting lost, running and more running. The evening was spent at Ride Club and I found out that the Sydney-sider here with me on exchange puts on one hell of a show after too many vodkas
.

Dienstag 23/2 – A terrible museum – although it had one room playing a collection of home videos from the 1920s and 30s. I loved every second of it. I don’t think Lydia and I have been quite so entranced or silent as we were for that half hour. Evening = Heuringer. Vienna is the only city which makes and sells its own wine so we gathered with other exchange kids and drank up.

This leaves me at today so tschau, I am off to spend money. That ATM card better arrive soon!!
